Default Baccarat Card Counting Cheaters Caught at Casino!

I just read that Four New York residents were arrested Saturday morning after police said they used a cheating device at a baccarat table at Mohegan Sun.

State police casino unit detectives said the gamblers were at a mini baccarat table using a cheating device to determine the order of the cards in the deck before they were dealt. Surveillance spotted the group acting suspiciously after 5 a.m.

The group now face charges of cheating while lawfully gambling, possession of a cheating device, first-degree larceny and first-degree criminal trespass. I didn't think this still happened in today's high-security casinos!

The following people were arrested and each held on $10,000 bond pending arraignment Monday in Norwich Superior Court: Yuan Chen, 50, of 749 57th St., Brooklyn, N.Y.; Dong Zhong, 45, of 1925 W. Sixth St., Brooklyn, N.Y.; Jim Tong, 41, of 500 E. Houston St., N.Y., N.Y.; and Yu Feng, 37, of 1225 White Plains Road, Bronx, N.Y.

Here are some reports I've read on the internet about this baccarat cheating scandal:
Quote:
State police arrested four people at the Mohegan Sun casino after they were caught with a card counting device.

State police say the New York residents were using the device at a baccarat table Saturday to determine the order or cards in the deck before they were dealt.

All four were charged with cheating while lawfully gambling, possession of a cheating device, first-degree larceny and first-degree criminal trespass.

Fifty-year-old Yuan Chen, 45-year-old Dong Zhong, 41-year-old Jim Tong, and 37-year-old Yu Feng were each being held on $10,000 bond and were scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Norwich Superior Court.

Four gamblers accused of trying to cheat their way to victory at Mohegan Sun are now facing charges.

Connecticut State Police say they caught four New York men using a card-counting device at a Baccarat table Saturday.

The suspects were each held on $10,000 bond over the weekend. They were arraigned Monday on various charges, including larceny and cheating while gambling.

Card counting without an outside device is legal, though some casinos ban the practice.

I've not seen any specific statements about the 'suspicious behavior' but I would expect that four males without any females is going to alert surveillance even if the four males are losing. If you have four males without any wives/girlfriends present and those four males are winning, clearly its going to alert surveillance.

Ofcourse its even worse if its 5:00am. Four males gambling alone in the wee hours of the morning... what on earth were they thinking? That they were invisible?? They should have hired some sort of female companionship for the evening and they should have had a fifth male who did the animated drunken friend routine on their behalf.

Now as to the cheating device. I would assume they were using a computer to predict cards based upon the discard sequence and a non-collusive but not optimal shuffle. Well, I'd sure like to see that algorithm!
I wonder why they brought the computer to the table though. It would have been much better to do the computation elsewhere and relay the data. They were fools. I guess most criminals are.

I've not learned anything additional concerning this incident. It does seem the four who were arrested were incredibly stupid and naive in the ways of casino surveillance procedures.

Sure would like to learn about that algorithm though. !!!

Count me in as well as one that would like to learn the algorithm!

But it is silly they just went in there guns blazing without any thought to how to make themselves seem less conspicuous.

Did you know there was also a baccarat cheating scandal last year in Macau as well?

I found an article on what happened then in 2007:

Quote:
It seems that baccarat scams are contagious the last few years. Last year (2007), of course, we saw the biggest known casino scam in history flourish across baccarat tables in casinos across the US and Canada, resulting in dozens of arrests and plea deals, including those of the current Mayor of Seattle, Washington's son. This time the locale for the latest major baccarat scam bust is Macau, which undoubtedly leads the "world league" in baccarat scam. It happened last June (2007) and the details are now coming out.

Two dealers from a Cotai casino were arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Monday for allegedly being trained to remember cards sequences and then telling their accomplices before they were to place bets. The PJ’s gaming-related Crime Division received a report from the casino which suspected their dealers of cheating out money from baccarat tables, police spokesman Chan Kin Hong said. Five men were arrested including a 22-year-old and a 23-year-old dealer with one of the three masterminds coming from China’s Shangxi province. Mr. Chan said one of the dealers admitted to police that he was “invited” to participate in the scam and taken to a unit where he was trained on how to remember the sequence of about 10 cards when shuffled. The dealer also said he would text the cards’ order to his accomplices whom he’d never met and then they would come to the gaming tables as a customer and place bets.

According to the information given, police believed the illegal organisation had been operating for a few months, adding the dealer told them he received a 20 percent share each time and had accumulated about HK$600,000 of illegal earnings in total.

The police spokesperson said the scam involved at least HK$3 million and the casino was still calculating the total loss. The three purported gamblers arrested were all from Shangxi province aged 34, 36 and 37, while the 37-year-old surnamed Ma was one of the masterminds, Mr Chan said. The other two masterminds were still on the run. Police said the two dealers had no financial problems and believed that they were attracted to participate in the scam because of “greed”. The five suspects will be sent to the Public Prosecutions Office and charged with organised crime and fraudulent gambling. The Dealers were arrested for casino card cons. Police are showing the “loots” seized including gaming chips and cash from the mainland suspects and cards from the dealers which they used to practice for the crime.
