Kang Byung-kyu, a baseball player turned-television host, has received a suspended jail term for habitually gambling through online gambling sites.
The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kang, 36, to two years of suspended prison term and 160 hours of community service, Thursday.
"Kang bet a huge amount of money on illegal games on Internet sites broadcasting Baccarat games live from a gambling house in the Philippines. He visited one of the sites 500 times," the court said.
"But the court gave him a suspended term since he was the only victim of losses, had no criminal record, and has reflected on his wrongdoing,'' it said.
Kang was indicted without physical detention on charges of betting 2.6 billion won ($1.8 million) from October 2007 to last May, losing 1.2 billion won.
