As any alpine skier will tell you, being in an avalanche isn't necessarily a good thing.

At Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks (Yolo County), however, officials have come up with something they say promises an "avalanche" of money to a number of lucky gamblers.

Called the Avalanche of Cash $1,000,000 Cash & Play Giveaway, this holiday-themed event is designed to give away a total of $1 million to card-carrying members of the casino's Cache Club until Dec. 30. Bill Harland, director of table games, said players can win up to $10,000 a pop.

The big bash began two weeks ago. Every day, the casino gives away a total of $10,000. This money is distributed 13 times daily between 10 a.m. and midnight. Each drawing awards cash prizes of anywhere from $500 to $5,000 to one lucky winner, and Bonus Play packages of $500 apiece also are up for grabs.

Cache Creek will up the ante from Dec. 25-30, when the casino will bump its daily cash giveaways to a total of $20,000, with 13 drawings of prizes ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, with additional awards of $500 in Bonus Play.

Like any large-scale, lottery-style game of chance, the Avalanche of Cash revolves around entry tickets. Cache Club members automatically receive two tickets daily between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and two more tickets daily between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Tickets are distributed automatically when players swipe their Cache Club cards at the Cache Club booth on the expansive casino floor.

Additional entry tickets are available for various other activities at Cache Creek. Harland said visitors will receive one ticket for each meal purchased at the casino's Harvest Buffet, each round of golf purchased at the new Yocha-De-He Golf Club and for each night's stay at the on-site resort.

Players also earn tickets from gambling. In the slot department, entry tickets are issued for every hand-paid jackpot of more than $1,200, and Cache Club members receive two additional entry tickets per day for every 2,500 points in slot play they redeem.

Ticket-winning hands in the table games department include four-of-a-kind in pai gow, suited blackjacks in blackjack and winning ties in mini baccarat. The poker room will dole out tickets for a number of hands as well.

Once players accumulate tickets, they must be present in order to be eligible to win. What's more, all prizes must be redeemed within two hours of each drawing. Naturally, this means that you'll have to invest some serious time at Cache Creek between now and the end of the year. Better tell your family to keep those Saint Bernards standing by.
